Pre-read Thoughts: This looks like an important book for me to read to help challenge myself and grow and do better and further unlearning.

During Read Thoughts: This puts a lot of puzzle pieces and dots together for me, it is a difficult read. I cried. I am angry. I also am taking notes on how to be better. This is a lot to process.

Post Read Thoughts: Time for me to do research, process, and then take action.

Cover Of Book:

White Women: Everything You Already Know About Your Own Racism and How to Do Better

In my efforts to unlearn racism and be better as a white person, I have been picking up more and more books specifically touching on race and how I can be better.

My prior nonfcition reads were technology focused and based on special interests, so this is out of my comfort zone. I heavily appreciate being challenged, being made uncomfortable, and being shown things I might have done wrong in the past that I can know to do better or never repeat in the future.

If your feminism does not include BIWOC individuals, it’s not feminism. Being colorblind is extremely harmful. We are not all on the same playing field.

Quotes:

“Antiracism work depends on your acknowledging your imperfections, namely how you have been born into and nurtured by a white supremacist society. This meant acknoledging that you are not the expert on how it feels to be on the receiving end of racism, which means you do not get to decide what is and is not racist.” “It means acknowledging that you will get it wrong, that you will feel embarrassed, and that you will struggle to make progress.” “You will show up because you understand what white supremacy hurts you too.”
“‘…..I had been sitting in a place of comfort, for quite some time,’ Amanda responds. White silence is comortable for white omwn. White silence is harmful, even deadly, for Black, Indigenous, and brown people.”

“We are exhausted by your white entitelement. Surely, you are too.”
