This is a wonderful YA Science Fiction book and a unique one at that.
It’s written in an approachable manner but has important elements like code switching that would be great for studying in classrooms.
The protagonist is likable, smart, witty, and I felt I bonded with them. The characters are truly dynamic and come to life.
We start with the protagonist being released from jail and are introduced to his wonderful family. This introduction allows us context and allows us to see where the protagonist comes from.

I recently read The City of Ember and Divergent and can confirm I enjoyed this book MORE than I enjoyed those. Because of this, I’m adjusting my rating to a 5 star. I keep thinking about this book and love that the author is both Lesbian and of Hawaiian descent – it’s incredibly important to me to hype up underrepresented authors.
I really enjoyed all of the tech references, as well as the creativity that this artwork of a book is. This was genuinely a work of art of a book.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this advanced copy for free! I am still thinking about it and already have a desire to re-read. This review is voluntary.
