There are so many moving parts in this book that I am struggling to put into words everything that I love about it. For me, when I am struggling to put a book down yet also getting comfortable with the author’s writing style, it’s such a luxurious experience. This book has Juliette and Roma as the main characters, and they both are heiress to opposite gangs that run the town. Juliette is with the Scarletts and Roma is with the White Flowers. The White Flowers are making crazy dugs, and there’s a monster that is rumored to be going out and about on command and using insects to kill people. This book is actually insane in the best of ways. If someone gets infected with a bug from this monster, they start ripping their own throats out. It’s wild. Then there’s the tension between the two main characters.
Book Review:
“These Violent Delights” By Chloe Gong
5/5, this is amazing!!!
This book I purchased initially at a used bookstore and did not realize that it qualified for the TRR challenge. I had soft DNF initially because there was a lot of reference to bugs in it and I was reading horror and at the time wanting something more comfort and right now I love dark fantasy and sci-fi so this was perfect for that.
This story follows two rival gangs and it does somewhat mimic Romeo and Juliet with the romance aspect as well and then coming from opposite parts of society and it’s a forbidden love story.
There was something new and intriguing and each chapter or more character building in each chapter, and it was clear that each one served a fundamental purpose and I think that’s why I struggled to put this book down so much.
It was also written in a writing style that I initially thought I wouldn’t enjoy, and I do think that it impacted my reading comprehension slightly, but a lot of fantasy books are written in this writing style, so it’s good practice for me too , try to put that helmet on and get into that world with this different writing style used of third person.
Multiple POV first person but fantasy person does help a lot. I’ve just also read books recently with the first person that have been done well so I know that both are good, but I think for this spoken particular because it’s already multiple POV for Roma and Juliet I think I would’ve preferred the writing style to be first person and I think I would’ve preferred a little bit more handholding with what is happening and a tiny bit less conversation about Scenes however this book so gets a five star and this is just me being nitpicky. I’m trying to do more lengthier reviews again, so this is my attempt. It’s a voice memo.
“Our Violent Ends” I’ve had that book since December and I also have “Foul Lady Fortune” so I’m planning on reading that as well after because I really enjoyed this one.
