The Reformatory

Book Review

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️

Method Of Reading: My ereader

Book Publication Date: October 31 2023

How I Acquired Book: Purchased on Amazon and Bookshop.org (I didn’t realize you have to read it on the bookshop org app, and I need my books on my ereader, thankfully it is $2 on sale so it was $4 and I ended up supporting a local bookstore, so no one lost.)

Pre-read Thoughts: I keep seeing and hearing about this book and I placed a library hold a WHILE ago but it’s popular so I have to wait 7 weeks. But then one of the book clubs I am in, left unread, see here picked it for the book club month read and it was on sale!!!! So it’s happening.

During Read Thoughts: Content warnings and spoiler warnings begin here. This is a horror book set in Jim Crow Florida. There are certain words I have not read or heard in a bit that took me back. This is a novel that makes you look at racism directly. It’s uncomfortable. It’s also really well written. I need to take some time to process what I just read. Ok I am about 12%? in, and I can’t put it down.

The Reformatory by Tananarive Due

This is going to take me some time to process as this book is very dark. It was angering, sadening, eye opening, and heartbreaking.

I need a few days to process before leaving a review, but here is a spoiler free one that has triggers in it from a book club buddy and friend: see here
