How I Acquired Book: Purchased it

Pre-read Thoughts: This was a nominee for an Indie Story Geek award! I also am a huge fan of the author and was really excited when this book went on sale.

During Read Thoughts: I didn’t think I would get completely sucked into it to be honest, but this was one of the best books I’ve ever read, hands down. It has everything.

Post Read Thoughts: Need to get this in paperback form when I have the ability to, and will re-read this yearly or whenever I am in a slump next.

You know when the world is burning and you can’t focus? That’s where my brain has been the past week. This book took me by surprise though. It has everything you could possibly want in a fantasy retelling. I am so so picky about fantasy books and about retellings, and I inhaled this book and my brain feels good now. It pulled me out of a reading slump.

At under 250 pages, this one is a great read for the Kindle. I believe it is available on Kobo plus! I personaly purchased this book as a license via a Kindle book on Amazon.

  • I heavily appreciated the content warnings going in. This is something I miss heavily with traditionally published books and it really bugs me. Your readers should know what they are getting into, and this book reminded me of how important content warnings are.
  • There was actually delicious meal descriptions in this book which I wasn’t excpecting or anticipating, and is one of my favorite things in books. I dislike it when authors default to sipping wine and eating steak at a restaurant – this bok had a unique restaurant in it, actual menu items created, like the full deal. The world was built so beautifully.
  • HOW did Jasper Hyde manage to do so much world building in such a short period of time without ever causing intentional confusion? Because they are incredibly talented. I believe this book is actually a nominee for an award, which does not surprise me.
  • I am struggling to think of anything I didn’t like with this book. I am also picky when it comes to spice. I need the bed scenes to be done well. This book DID IT WELL. I wanted to be in this book getting it. Seriously. This author CAN WRITE SMUT. I read a lot of bad smut, and this is top tier. Like, top two books for spice, and it wasn’t even based on the spice at all. This just happens to be a book with romance as part of the plot, but it just added to the complexity of the story. None of it was thrown in.
  • ALSO THE HUMOR?! It made the characters all so much more realistic. No one is sitting down after a traumatic event acting normal. The main character was NOT ok and was behaving in an actual realistic manner, versus weird overly professional glossy dialougue that just does not make sense for the character. I am actually obsessed with this book. It has also changed my opinion slightly on detective and like crime and murder msyteries. I was not a fan of the police detective crime type of mystery as the ones I had picked up were heavily focused on police dialogue within the station and not so much on the actual plot. THIS book is everything.
